For how long are checks from the US Government good? My mother passed, and going through her belongings, I found uncashed checks for interest on Series H bonds that are over 30 years old. Any chance that they are still good?
Current U.S. Treasury regulations make Treasury checks over one year old void. Checks that are more than one year old should be sent back to the authorizing agency. The Treasury's Bureau of the Public Debt is responsible for savings bond redemptions and interest -- to determine whether they can be replaced.
Write to the Bureau and describe what you've found. Make sure to state that your mother has died, then ask if the checks can be replaced or if there is any other way to claim the funds those checks represent. Here's the address:
