Correct Way to Write Amount of Check

We have a check for $240. The legal written line says two forty on it instead of two hundred and forty. Is this a legal way of writting 240? Doesn't it have to have hundred written out, otherwise we could suspect it to be 2.40?

There are two amounts written on most checks. When those two amounts conflict, the amount in words controls. If the amount in numerals is "$240.00" and the amount in words is "two forty dollars," there isn't necessarily a conflict, because "two forty" can mean 240 or 2.40. Ideally, the words should read "two hundred forty dollars." If you aren't comfortable with the check as written, contact your customer and refuse to accept it.
