I have a check that was issued to a business and myself. How do I cash or deposit it, if the check reads, to Amex Inc OR Jon Doe? What is the process? Are some bank policies different from others? I am not the owner of the company just a G.M., but I negotiated and signed the contract for the advancement check, hence why it includes my name.
If the check is payable to "Amex OR Jon Doe," than either of those two can negotiate payment. If a check is payable to both jointly, instead of "or" it would say "and" or "&" or it could be silent and considered payable to either. In this case both Amex or John can do anything with that check without the signature of the other. More information on jointly payable checks can be found in this Q&A.
