I recently loaned out money to my friend so she could buy a coach bag for a raffle she was doing. Days later she came back to me with half of the money and three checks. Two of the checks say Pay To: "Cash" for "Coach Bag". However, the third check is made out to my friend's boyfriend and it says For "Raffle". How can I cash them, if I don't even know the people who gave her the checks, and they can't endorse them to me?
Checks payable to cash don't require an endorsement to be transferred. The third check would need the boyfriend's endorsement. However, even if the third check is endorsed, your bank might not be willing to accept any of the checks for deposit. Tell your friend that you can't accept these, and ask her to handle getting them cashed, so that she can repay your generous loan in cash.
