I received a check from a guy with whom I made a deal to sell something. He agreed to send me a check with enough money for the item and to have it shipped. ($150) He sent me a check for $2,300 and it looks totally fake. It has two addresses on it. The memo and signature lines are slanted. Should I notify somebody about this phony check?
You can try to contact the bank the check is supposedly drawn on to ask about the check, although some banks won't respond to such inquiries, or you can take the check to your bank and ask them to offer an opinion. Do not deposit the check to your account or ship anything. Instead, ask your bank to take the check for collection. There will be a fee involved for that service, but you would know if the check is good or not before giving up the merchandise. You can take the check to the police to report what you think is a counterfeit check scheme.
