Tracing a Deposit

I am receiving checks from a Canadian company using a Canadian bank. The checks they send me say "payable thru bank's agent in New York". Is my check in reality clearing through a US bank instead of a Canadian bank? If so, then if I have made a deposit of this check, which I understand is then presented by my bank to this bank's agent in NY for payment, would that bank have a trace of my deposit in NY or would I need to contact the Canadian bank?

If you need to determine whether a check you deposited has cleared, you should start with the agency bank in New York, since the check would have been routed through it. Even if that office doesn't have the information, it may be able to provide you with a contact point at the Canadian bank to complete the search. If you are trying to track down a check you haven't received, you should look to the issuing company, not either bank.
