Correct Way to Write a Check

Is there a correct way to list the payee name on a check? Is it last name first or first name first. My controller said that the check should be written out based on what checking accounts are set up as by the banks, which is first name then last. My bank account sends my mail, and my account is set up as Jane Doe. I received a check Doe, Jane. What is actually the correct way the check should be written.

Although it may seem strange to see a check with the payee listed last name first, there's nothing wrong with it. All that's needed is to indicate the check issuer's intention. When more than one payee is listed, putting commas between last name and first name could cause confusion, though.

Often checks are printed by systems to reflect the way the system maintains records. If you are known to the issuing system as "Doe, Jane" that's the way the check will read. If the system knows you as "Jane Doe" your check will name you that way.

Another place you may find your name turned around is your driver's license. Changing the order in which your name is displayed doesn't change your name, and the order in which your name is displayed on a check should not affect your ability to deposit or cash it.
