Multiple Payees Create Big Confusion

I received a check from our home insurance company, payable to me, my husband and the mortgage company. We endorsed it to our mortgage company. Now they send us a check made out to me, my husband and a contractor, which is my dad. Do we all have to be at the bank to cash the check or to deposit? My husband and I have two separate accounts, different bank.

Your mortgage company wants to ensure that home repairs are completed so that the value of your home is maintained, so they added the name of the contractor. You already know that you three will all have to endorse the check before it is deposited to an account. Whether that will be your account, your husband's, or your father's will depend on how you agree to pay your father for the work. Whether all of you will have to appear at the bank to receive the check for deposit will be a matter of that bank's policy. If whoever wants to deposit the check contacts the appropriate bank and explains the situation, the bank should be able to give you a quick answer to your question. If you all have to appear, make sure that everyone has acceptable identification for the bank.
