My roommate and I received a security deposit refund check from the property management company that manages the house where we live. We had a third roommate that moved out and didn't leave a forwarding address. The check was issued with all three of our names on it and we are having trouble depositing it into our joint account, because it doesn't have our ex-roommate's endorsement on it. We have no idea where our ex-roommate is, so we are unable to get his endorsement on the check. How can we get this check deposited without his signature?
You can't, unfortunately, unless you somehow track down the old roommate. Contact the management company and explain the situation. Ask them to re-issue the check with just two payees. If they balk at that idea, perhaps they'd be willing to hold 1/3 of the security deposit for the missing roommate and reissue 2/3 of the deposit to you and your remaining roommate.
This sort of problem comes up all the time, since it's not unusual for roommates to go their own ways. That means that management companies may have figured out how best to address these situations.
