My auto insurance company wrote a check to the body shop and me. The check is one-third the cost of repairs. Can they require me to use the body shop they say to get it done to their satisfaction, or can I use it for my other bills? Is what they are doing illegal?

The check is issued jointly to you and the body shop to ensure that the repair work is done. The endorsement of the body shop and your endorsement are both required before either party can negotiate the check. Therefore, you can't legally use the check for other bills unless you pay the body shop to release its interest in the check, which it will not do, under state law and its agreement with insurance companies, unless the body work is completed. As for the amount of the check, that depends on provisions in your automobile insurance policy and state law.
