I found a check that was given to me dated Oct. 2008. Is it still good?
Well, the date is fine. A bank may summarily refuse to pay a check that's more than six months old. Since it is now February 2009, only four months have passed.
If a friend gave you the check, you could ask him or her if the check has a stop payment on it, because you didn't cash it right away. Assuming there is no stop payment, cash or deposit it quickly before it gets misplaced again.
