I have a check drawn on the Royal Bank of Scotland for $50.79 USD currency. It is a refund for an unused train ticket from Eurail. When I took it to my bank where I have an account, they would not cash it.
They told me that they would not cash a check for less than $150 from a foreign bank. My bank also told me that the fees that they would charge would not make cashing the check worthwhile. Where can I cash this check without being charged fees?
There is probably not any place that you'd be able to escape fees altogether. RBS owns two groups of banks: Charter One in the upper mid-west and Citizens Bank in the Northeast. If you're near one of those banks, you might stop by and ask about cashing the check. Otherwise, it probably would not be worth the cost to try.
