'Refer to Maker' ...after a Year!

I deposited a check over a year ago and the bank just got back to me and said it was not good. They marked it "refer to maker" and took the money out of my account. Both banks are in the same state. Can my bank do this after all this time?

Your bank should not have accepted a returned check so long after it was deposited. It's apparent, based on the information you provided, that the bank the check is drawn on discovered a problem several months after it paid it.

Take the check back to your bank promptly, note the delay in the other bank's return of the check, and ask that your bank send it back because of that delay. You have every right to expect that the funds will be credited back to your account.
