Check Writer Admits NSF: What Happens to Me?

A renter gave us a check. We cashed it at our bank. The renter then notified us that their account does not have enough money in it to cover the check. We have the cash. Will my bank come back on me for this bad check?

Quite possibly, but that will depend on what the check issuer's bank does, since it could decide to pay the check in spite of the overdraft. If it does so, you won't be affected.

If, however, the check is bounced, your endorsement will give your bank the right to look to you for the funds. In most cases, that will mean that your bank will charge your account for the amount of the check, and possibly for a returned item processing fee, and then return the check to you. Then you'll have to look to your renter for payment of the check and the fee.
