Endorsing Tax Refund Check to Another

Can I endorse my IRS check over to my mother-in-law so that I can get it cashed?

Yes, you can do that, but be aware that your mother-in-law may not be able to cash or deposit it. Banks are getting increasingly reluctant to accept what they call "third party" checks, checks that are payable to a third party who endorses them to a bank customer, because they are unable to verify the original payee's endorsement or identification.

Probably the wisest course for you to take is to ask your mother-in-law to accompany you to her bank and ask if the bank will cash the check with endorsements by both you and your mother-in-law. Don't endorse the check yourself until you've received the OK from the bank.
