I have oustanding checks written to me because the person who wrote them closed his checking account, is this legal?
Knowingly issuing a worthless check in exchange for value (goods, services, etc.) is a misdemeanor or felony in most states. If the person who gave you the checks got nothing for them, if the checks were gifts, it's likely that you won't have a case. However, if you gave cash, goods or services in exchange for the checks, you can pursue the issuer for payment. Depending on circumstances, you may decide to use small claims court or to press charges with the local police.
