My mom got a check that should have been payable to me, but they made it out to her. She sent it to me, but forgot to sign the back of it, endorsing it over to me. She lives in a different state and told me to sign the back of the check for her and just sign under her. Is this OK to do?
Yes and no. If your mother gave you permission to sign her name, doing so would not be forgery, but your bank may not be willing to accept the check for deposit with an endorsement that the bank cannot verify. That wouldn't change even if your mother had endorsed the check herself. It would have been a lot cleaner transaction if the check had been made out to you in the first place, or if your mother had deposited it and sent you a check on her account.
