Depositing a Joint Tax Refund Check

My wife and I file our taxes jointly and received an IRS check made to both of us. We do not have a joint bank account. How do I deposit the check in my account without taking her to the bank with me?

Your bank may be willing to accept your wife's endorsement without inquiring farther; it could also want to assure itself that she signs it. Contact the bank, explain the situation, and ask how the bank wants you to proceed.

If the bank insists that your wife endorse the check in person and your wife is unable to travel to the bank, ask if the bank has some way to accommodate you, such as having one of its staff witness her signature away from the bank. Next year, think about having the refund deposited directly to your account to avoid the hassle.
