Cashing a 2-Year Old Government Check

I found a check in my closet from the government for E.I. benefits, dated June, 2007. Can I still cash it? Will I need to get a new check sent to me, and if so how long would that take?

It's very unlikely that a bank will accept a check so old for deposit or for cash. In fact, if you are able to negotiate it, it's more than likely that the check will not be paid, and someone will be looking to you for reimbursement.

Contact the government agency that authorized the check back in 2007 to find out whether you can obtain a replacement. The agency will be able to tell you how long you'll have to wait for the new check, if it's even available.
