Can a creditor put a freeze on a bank account where my Social Security check is directly deposited?
Federal law protects both Social Security SSA and SSI payments from attachment, levy, garnishment and other legal process both before and after disbursement to the beneficiary. Funds deposited by direct deposit or by check that are SSA or SSI benefits continue to be protected. In addition, some states have enacted similar or additional protection for these and similar benefit payments.
