Stop Pay on Canadian Check is Puzzling

I deposited a check in the amount of $4181.45 US dollars drawn from CANADA TRUST dated 6/19/2009 into our business account on 6/22/2009. On 7/24/2009, I was notified that a stop payment had been placed on the check and the funds returned to Canada. The company that issued it had written checks prior to that and two others since then with no stop payment on those. Is this legal? Do I have any recourse? The business is in Quebec, Canada. I am in Wisconsin.

Canadian banks follow Canadian banking laws and checks are processed once they cross into Canada under Canadian rules and customs. The net result of this mess is that you have not yet been paid. Presumably, unless the check issuer has some defense to payment, your recourse is to demand a new check. Whether you can force the matter is, of course, another question.
