I received a $4,750.00 check in the mail for advance payment and deposited it. If it's fraudulent, am I responsible?
If the check is fraudulent and you've received credit for it in the form of a deposit balance, your account will be charged for the amount of the check, plus any returned deposited item fee, and you will be responsible for any deficit balance and overdraft fees that result.
Before depositing the check, ask your bank if it can assist you in determining whether it's legitimate. It may not be possible, in which case you'd be better off paying to have your bank send the check for collection, rather than depositing it and risking the charge-back to your account.
