Has ATM Card - No Account: What Happens Now?

I just got on social security disability. I got a large check retroactive to the last five months. I have no bank account, only an ATM card. Where can I cash this check and not have to pay $150 to cash it?

If you don't have a bank account, your ATM card is probably invalid. Typically, such a card only works with a bank account, although there are some benefits cards that can be used like ATM cards.

Whether or not you'll be able to cash the retroactive benefits check depends very much on the policies and procedures of banks and check cashing businesses in your area. You'll have to do some research in person or by telephone, but before attempting to cash the check, make certain that you have a photo ID, a current driver's license or state-issued ID card is usually acceptable, but requirements could vary.
