Hold, then Stop Payment: What is going on?

I was given a check as a gift and deposited it into my checking account. A fifteen day hold was placed on it. After thirty days, the bank allowed a stop payment on the check. Is this legal?

Stop payments are only valid if they are made before the check in question is paid. The scenario you've described suggests that the stop was filed long after the check had already been paid. Ask your bank to make a late return claim on the check.
