What is the procedure to cash a joint check made payable to two people when one lives in another state?
If the two payees are listed with "and" or "&" between them, the law requires that both payees endorse the check. Because banks are far from uniform in their policies concerning acceptance of such checks for deposit, each payee should inquire of his/her bank to find out whether it would accept the check if endorsed by the other payee. The bank would understand that it would not have the ability to verify the other payee's endorsement.
If both payees get negative responses, the only other options are for one payee to visit the other and accompany him/her to the bank or for the payees to ask the issuer to reissue separate checks. Don't endorse the check before going to the bank, just in case the bank still won't accept it for deposit.
