Can Federal Government Checks be Refused?

Last week I went to a local Walmart here in GA to cash my SSI check, but was refused. They said that the national check guarantee company they use did not issue an approval. I have heard that GA state law says merchants cannot refuse to cash social security, or SSI checks from the federal government. Is this true?

There is no federal law or regulation requiring that a bank or merchant accept a check issued by the U.S. Treasury. Some states have enacted laws that require banks (and in some cases, others) to cash certain types of state or federal government checks. Those laws vary from state to state, and you'll have to check with a local legal source for details in your state.
