My account was closed at my bank back in September. I tried to deposit a check, not knowing that it was closed. The bank sent me a substitute check in the mail, stating the reason for its return being that the account is closed. Can I cash this substitute check? It says on it "Use as you would the original copy of the check".
Legally, you should be able to do anything with the substitute check that you could do with the original. In practice, however, you may find that cashing it is somewhere between difficult and impossible, with your best chances being at a bank where you currently do business. Many people are wary of taking substitute checks because they aren't familiar with them, so you are likely to run into resistance. If you aren't able to cash or deposit it, contact the issuer of the original and ask for a replacement.
