I deposited a federal check for over $15k. Does the right to withhold funds extend to federal treasury checks?
Actually, yes, it does. Even on U.S. Treasury checks, if a deposit of checks exceeds $5,000, the bank can place a large deposit hold on it. The first $5,000 of the deposit should be available on the business day after you deposit the check, and the remaining amount of the deposit must be available on the seventh business day after the day of deposit. If your deposit is made on a Monday, you will be able to access $5,000 on Tuesday, and to the balance on Wednesday of the next week.
