We are a nonprofit and recieved a few donation checks at the first of the year dated January, 2009. It's likely the donors just haven't switched to 2010 in their minds yet. Can we correct it, or must we ask them to resend a proper check? What is the proper way to handle it?
In most cases, the dates on those checks won't even be noticed. Banks simply don't usually have the time to check dates, and when they do, often ignore checks like these that are deposited in the early weeks of January with a prior year's date. If you are concerned, you can neatly line through the "2009" and insert "2010" next to or above it, or you can go to the trouble of asking those generous donors to replace their checks.
