What to do with Out-of-State Check

I should be receiving a check within the next few days from my school in Burlington, VT. However, the bank that I use does not have any branches in Vermont, and it would be difficult for me to get home to deposit it. I don't want to sign it and then mail it home to be deposited, because I don't want to risk it being lost or stolen. Is there any way in which I could mail it home unsigned and still have it deposited into my checking account?

Call the bank and ask if it will accept the unendorsed check for deposit to your account. Most banks are able to accommodate such requests, and can stamp the check to indicate that it was deposited to an account of the payee.

If the bank insists that you endorse the check, use this form to minimize the risk of loss or theft:
Pay to [name of bank]
for deposit only
