I received a check for a work at home scam. I went to the bank where the check was issued, and they verified that it was valid and gave me cash. Then the bank called me and said they want their money back and they want me to pay fees. Since they cashed the check and verified the account, am I responsible for the fees?
That is difficult to tell because it is not known whether there were any fee notices, etc., involved. The bank bears responsibility for cashing a check drawn on an account there, whether it did so in error or not. It may be entitled to recover the amount of the check, but it shouldn't be able to charge you any fees if you repay the amount promptly.
