Multiple Payees Separated by 'Or'

Is it valid or legal for a check to be made out to two separate organizations or individuals using the word "or" such that either could cash the check when presented for deposit or otherwise?

When the payees are separated by "or" any of those payees may negotiate the check without the approval of the others. When they are separated by "and" the check is payable to each, and each will have to endorse it so that it is evidenced that each received benefit. If nothing is denoted, "and" is the assumed intent. Either of these payment orders works and is perfectly fine.
