My son is incarcerated. Can I deposit his tax rebate check into my account to pay his bills?
Check with your bank to see if it's at all possible. If it is, there are two ways it could be done.
The first option would be for you to take his check to him and obtain his endorsement, making the check payable to you. If this method is acceptable to your bank, your son should endorse the check "Pay to [your name], [his signature]." Then, when you get back to your bank, you would add your own endorsement before depositing it.
The second option would be for your son to give you a power of attorney that would specifically give you the authority to endorse the check on his behalf and (this is important) to deposit it to your own account for the purpose of paying his obligations.
Of the two options, the first is certainly the easier for you. The power of attorney option could require some legal assistance. Before taking either route, however, check with your bank to see whether it will accept either option, because the bank is not obligated to accommodate you by accepting the check for deposit to your account at all.
