I had an insurance check mailed to me; it was stolen. It was deposited into an account at a bank I do not use. My name was not forged. All that is on the back of the cancelled check is a bunch of numbers, and Bank of America (not my bank). How can I find out which Bank of America branch deposited my check by the numbers on the back? Also, the check issuer says I can't be reembursed by them since this check has cleared already. I have also made a police report.
We have to assume that you got a copy of the check from the insurance company. If it didn't get to you or go through your account, you couldn't have a copy.
Do this the easy way and go to the insurance company that wrote you the check. Tell them you didn't receive it, and you want to be paid. They have an obligation to ensure you receive the funds. The insurance company should pay you, and they need to go to the bank that cashed the check and get their money back. That bank that failed to properly identify the person cashing the check will suffer the loss.
