Bank Won't Cash Check: Cites 'State of the Account'

I went to a bank to cash my payroll check. I work for an elderly lady, and her son is her POA. This bank has cashed my check with my two forms of ID many times before, but this time they would not. The reason they gave was "the state of the account". What does that mean?

The honest answer is, we can't be sure. We assume you mean that the bank the check is drawn on said this. It may mean there are not sufficient funds in the account, funds are held for some reason or any number of things. Go back to your employer and tell them that the check won't pay and you'd like cash.
