When I deposited a check in my bank, they deposited it for too large of an amount. I called them soon after, but they didn't bother to look into it. How will they correct this mistake? Do I have to pay them back to pay back the writer of the check?
If you deposited a check for say $100, and they credited you for $1,000, call them again. First and foremost, do not spend the money that isn't really there. The problem will be found and corrected. It is possible an encoding error was made and they may try to process the check for $1,000. The writer of the check could be impacted, but the error should be detected under normal processing. The longer it takes though, the harder and more troublesome it will be to correct.
In the end, neither you, nor the person who wrote the check should have any cost associated with this, other than time. However, speak to a bank manager or officer to indicate why you think an error was made. That is all you can do at this point.
