Client Sends Check, then Reverses: What to do?

I had a check for $1,100, which I deposited into my checking account three months ago. A person owed me the money and I have a signed contract. Now, this person just had the deposit reversed out of my account for the entire amount. This person owed me the money for services rendered, what do I do? The other person's bank won't help me. This should be considered fraud; also they are out of state.

Without knowing the circumstances under which the check was charged back to your account, we can't really provide a helpful response, although any delay of three months is certainly suspect as being a late return. Ask your bank why it accepted the return of the check at such a late date. Your bank may be able to claim a late return and get the funds back. If that's not possible, you can take the legal action against your customer that you already know you have as a last option.
