Accepting a Damaged Check

Can we refuse to accept a damaged personal check that has a lot of white-outs and corrections written all over it?

In most cases you are free to refuse a check for any reason. It may depend on a written agreement you have with the person paying you by check, but if it is suspicious, ask for a replacement, even a Cashier's Check, cash, or a direct transfer.
