Transferring Checks Payable to Cash

How many times can a check payable to cash be endorsed or transferred to another person? Do banks accept these checks?

A bearer check (a check payable to cash or to "bearer") does not need to be endorsed in order for a transfer to be completed. There's no limit on the number of times the check can be transferred before it's paid. Of course, if a transferee refuses to accept the check without an endorsement (which he, she or it can certainly require), the physical space available for endorsements creates a practical limit on such transfers.

A bank sets its own policy on whether it will accept a check for deposit. We are not aware of any specific bank that would not accept a check payable to "cash" for deposit, but you would do well to contact a bank to determine whether it would or would not do so.
