Bank Wants to Witness Endorsing: What to do?

I received a sizeable cashier's check in payment for a car. It was made out to the individual and he endorsed it (I checked his ID). Now my bank won't take it as a deposit without witnessing him signing it. I have no way of reaching him, as he was a stranger. What can I do to get the money?

Contact the bank on which the check was written. Hopefully, they have the person's signature on file and can verify that he signed the check. They can then pay you. You may be able to do this by sending the check for collection through your bank.

Your bank doesn't want any liability for the signature, as they didn't see the person sign it and could be open to a forgery claim later. It isn't worth the risk to them.
