From Readers' Digest: Did I Really Win?

I received a check in the mail from Readers Digest, and it says that I have won the amount of $500,000 concerning a random drawing. My husband, called the number on the letter, and a Mr. Dave Washington spoke with him about the check. My husband told him that he wanted to know if this is a scam, and that we will find out with the bank if this check is good. They said that there is one thing that I had to do, namely, call them myself, because they want me to call myself. I did; they did not ask me any questions, they just told me that I had won. What do you advise me to do?

Readers Digest has conducted a number of sweepstakes as part of its marketing for many years. Ordinarily, a winner receives a letter in advance asking for certain information (to qualify the winner for the prize and to permit Readers Digest to complete required tax reporting of the winnings). There may be options on payout schedules that have to be resolved, too.

If you have already received a check, one way to be sure it's legitimate is to ask your bank to send it for collection. Your bank will have you endorse it at the bank, and send it to Readers Digest's bank for payment by cashier's check, which will be sent back to your bank for credit to your account. There will be a cost for the service, but it is well worth the cost to have the peace of mind that the check is good. If the check is not good, your bank will hear about it and inform you. Take care of setting the check up for collection right away, and we hope you get good news!
