Make a Change: Leave your Initials

What items can be crossed out and re-written on a check with an initial above them? I had a check where the client had started to write out the amount out, realized a mistake, crossed it out and wrote in the correct amount, which matched the number amount. The bank claimed the check was invalid because someone can't make changes on the written amount. I thought anyone could make changes on any part of the check as long as the change is initialed.

The bank may have been concerned that the drawee bank would not honor the check because of the change. It's never a good idea to change the amount in words on a check. You'll have to ask the client for a replacement check. Consider that the drawee bank (the bank that is asked to pay it) is likely not to be able to recognize its customer's initials.
