I received a personal check from out of town. I went to the bank on which it was written, and called several times; the check won't clear. It has only been two days, but I am on disability and need the money. I know if I deposit it into my account, they will only send it through twice, and then I will lose the money altogether. Can you please help me?

You've gone above and beyond in an attempt to cash the check without risking having it bounce back to you. You were concerned that the check might not be any good, and you were correct in not depositing it, if only to avoid having your account charged for the returned deposited check. Many banks have such fee.
If the check writer owes you the money, you can contact him or her and ask that you be sent a replacement check, and you certainly have the right to ask that the replacement be a money order or bank check, if you're not in a position to ask for the cash instead. If the check was sent to you for some other reason (a gift, for example) there's not a lot you can do to require a replacement, but you can ask.
