Renters used a cashier's check to pay for the rent. I deposited it, but they have since put a stop payment on it and the funds were taken out of my account. Can they put a stop payment on a cashier's check if it was made out to me? How should I go about getting my funds back?
Are you sure that what you received was a cashier's check, because cashier's checks are not subject to stop payment. Take the check back to your bank and ask them to refuse the return (and send it back to the issuing bank for payment). They should do that by collection letter, and state in their correspondence that an issuing bank cannot refuse to pay its cashier's check.
If, on the other hand, what you received was a personal money order, you have a different set of rules. Personal money orders are subject to stop payment orders. If that's what you have, you will have to pursue your tenants for the money they owe you.
