My brother signed over a cashier's check to me for $4,000. The check is in his name and was from his stepfather. I deposited it and used the funds to pay bills, but now the bank is saying that the check is not good. Who is responsible for the check my brother or my stepfather?
If you add yourself to the list, you're all responsible. You and your brother are liable because you endorsed it. Your stepfather is liable to your brother because he gave him the check, (we are assuming that he owed your brother the money for some reason).
Somewhere in this mess is the individual who caused it. You'll need to know why the bank is claiming that the check is no good, because there are very few circumstances under which a cashier's checks won't be good. Is the bank saying it is a forgery?
