Writing Cashier's Checks to Yourself

I found approximately fifty cashier's checks that my husband made payable from himself to himself between 1982 and 1986. These checks total about $400,000. Has he done anything illegal?

Some folks don't like dealing with banks and, when they come into large sums of cash, have been known to convert it into cashier's checks in manageable chunks, and tuck it away. Others may be fine dealing with banks, but don't want the banks to report cash to the IRS, as they would have to do if cash transactions exceeded $10,000. However, it's possible that even if the money was obtained legally, avoiding government reporting requirements can be illegal.

On the more obviously illegal side of things, there's the possibility of an attempt to hide income from the government to avoid taxes. Contact an attorney to offer guidance on how to proceed.
