I took a check that my employer wrote me to the bank that it was drawn on to cash it, and they told me that I would have to pay a $5 fee to do this. Is it legal for them to charge a fee to cash a check when the check is drawn on their bank?
Unless the bank is state-chartered and the state has a law against such a fee, a bank may charge a fee for cashing checks drawn on it. Some state laws require that employers provide an arrangement for employees to cash their checks at no charge. Ask your employer whether he has such an arrangement.
