Clearing Time for a Canadian Check

What is the normal clearing time for a check from a foreign/Canadian bank made out in U.S. dollars without a designated bank?

If the check is drawn on a Canadian bank (and not its U.S. branch or office), it's really difficult to decide what's "normal" for a clearing time. Sometimes there are periods of up to two months before a U.S. bank has received a dishonored Canadian bank check. Perhaps six weeks is a good estimate.

A lot of things can affect the clearance time for foreign items. Several years ago there was an alert about a pending labor strike against the Canadian postal system. That strike threatened to cause prolonged delays in check clearance.
