Potential Problems with Depositing Old Check

I deposited a check on March 6th that a company gave me three years ago. On March 11th my bank said that it cleared. Are there any potential problems with the check that could arise?

March 11 would be too early for your bank to be certain that the check on the other bank had cleared. In fact, if there were delivery delays, it could take longer than normal for such a check to be received by your bank if the other bank refuses payment.

Speaking of the other bank -- it has only one chance to pay or refuse the check based on the date. If the bank notices the date it can pay the check or return it unpaid. If it returns it unpaid, it must do so by the end of the banking day following the day the check shows up for payment. Your bank should refuse to accept a return of the check if it is apparent that the other bank was late making a return.
