Funds from Cashed Check Not Removed

I deposited a check into my account a couple of months ago. I see the money there, but the person who wrote the check has not had the funds removed from her account and has not received a cancelled check. Is it possible that the funds were accidentally taken from a different account? How can we rectify this situation so that the bank doesn't take action later and possibly cause an overdraft?

So long as your friend balances her account and has the funds available in the event that check is presented for payment, there shouldn't be a problem. She shouldn't remove that money as she has already obligated it.

It is possible that the check was damaged, was hand coded, and went against the wrong account. It is also possible that it was lost in transit somehow. The latter isn't likely, but it could happen. In either case, if the problem is found, the check may well be sent to pay out of your friends account. She could bring it up to her bank in case they have it somewhere just waiting for an employee to get the time to review it.
